Workshop Abstracts
Getting Published in Academic Journals——Brian Paltridge
This workshop considers what is involved in getting published in peer-reviewed academic journals, highlighting the importance of developing competence in four specific domains: competence in scholarly communication, competence in strategic research conception, competence in strategic management of publishing, and for research students, competence in publishing the dissertation-in-progress (Kwan 2010). Examples of how each of these competencies can be developed will be presented.
Evaluative Meanings in Business Communication: Using Appraisal in CVs——Caroline Lipovsky
In the recruiting process, CVs provide job applicants with an opportunity to market their skills and competences, and consequently control the image that they present to recruiters in their effort to be shortlisted for a job interview. To this effect, evaluative meanings mayplay a role in improving recruiters’ perceptions of an applicant, subsequently boosting their chances of being shortlisted.
Drawing on analysis of a set of authentic CVs that uses systemic functional linguistics, and in particular Appraisal theory (Martin and White 2005), the workshop will address the following issues: What are the ways in which applicants appraise their skills and competences in their bid to impress their recruiters or in their attempt to control the image that they present to these recruiters? Are the evaluations on the CVs of applicants who are shortlisted for job interviews written any differently from those on the CVs of applicants who are not selected? Finally, since applicants use their CVs as a self-promoting tool to paint as positive an image of themselves as possible, could they enhance the impression they make by varying the way they write these evaluations?

Critical Discourse Awareness in Business Communication——Wei Wang
This workshop will explore the significance and implication of being critical in business communication with a view to raising the awareness of critical discourse understanding in business communication. It will consider the differences of ‘being critical’ in western and Chinese contexts. This workshop will guide the participants to analyse an authentic business activity with a framework of critical discourse analysis.
Computer-Aided Business Writing Teaching System Demo——江进林
本发言主要介绍机辅商务英语写作教学系统,并演示它在教学中的实际应用。该系统由电竞博彩论坛
与计算机软件公司联合自主研发,受到五千万词的“商务英语写作语料库”的支撑。教师可以上传教案、布置作业、管理资源、机辅评分、在线答疑并进行教学研究,学生可以下载课件、机辅写作、查看评改、在线提问并与同学交流。针对该系统已有一套试行理论,即教学分为无机辅写作、半机辅写作、全机辅写作三个阶段。
In this session, computer-aided business English writing system is introduced and its application in classroom is demonstrated. This system is developed jointly by University of International Business and Economics and a software company, and supported by fifty-million-word Business English Writing Corpus. Teachers can upload lesson plans and assignments, manage resources, score writing with the aid of computer, answer questions and do research on the corpus or student’s writing. Students can download materials, view scored writing and comments, ask questions online and exchange with classmates. The system has a set of pilot theory that teaching can be divided into three phases: writing without the aid of the system, writing with partial aid of the system and writing with full aid of the system.

主要介绍围绕《综合商务英语》课程编写的教材—商务英语综合教程的编写理念和教学方法,分享在教育部开设第一个商务英语专业后对商务英语专业基础课程的定位、基础教材编写和教学方法的探索。
The presentation focuses on the rationale of the teaching materials used for the course of Business English and the method for classroom teaching. The core course book, Business English: An integrated course, is the first set designed and developed for the business English majors. The presentation describes very briefly the syllabus, structure and the key features of the course books. Then it describes the role tasks play in developing integrated skills.
